Joel Alper
Mr. Alper recently stepped down from the Chair of the National
Philharmonic after five consecutive terms, but continues as Chair of
the Governance and Planning Committee. Retired from the position of
CEO and President of Comtech Mobile Datacom, which he founded in
1993 and brought to a world class position in the satellite based
packet data communications market, Mr. Alper spent his entire
44-year career in activities related to satellite communications.
In his prior position with Comsat Corp., he led its major divisions
over an 18-year period. He has served on the boards of several US
and foreign corporations, including the International Satellite
Organization (INTELSAT), for which he served as Chairman in 1986.
He currently participates on the Advisory Board of the
College
of Engineering at The Cooper Union, and also on the school’s
President’s Advisory Board. Mr. Alper holds a Masters Degree in
Civil Engineering from MIT, an MBA from
Boston University, and
a Bachelors Degree in Engineering from Cooper Union. He and his
wife, Louise, reside in Potomac, Maryland and Bonita Springs,
Florida.
Rabbi Leonard Cahan
Rabbi Cahan became Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation Har Shalom in
Potomac, Maryland, in July, 2001, where he served as Senior Rabbi
for 27 years. Upon graduating from the Jewish Theological Seminary
in 1961 he served four years as a US Navy Chaplain, and 36 years as
a pulpit rabbi. In 1998, the Revised Edition of Siddur Sim Shalom
(the Prayer book used widely in synagogues by the Conservative
Movement) for Shabbat & Festivals, was published, for which he
served as Chairman of the Editorial Committee, and he is presently
working on the forthcoming prayer book for weekdays, and a French
language edition. Following the completion
of the second volume, for Weekdays, he began editing a third volume,
for the Home, presently in progress. He and his wife,
Elizabeth, reside in
Potomac, Maryland.
They have four children: Jonathan, Benjamin, Sara, and Joshua
and one grandson, Elisha.
Sterling
Crockett
Mr. Crockett opened the doors of SCS (Sterling Construction
Services, Inc.) in August 1999, to provide complete remediation and
construction services for both commercial and government clients.
Mr. Crockett's firm belief in support of local organizations has led
him to serve on the boards of both the Victim's Rights Foundation,
where he was recently recognized as Board Member of the Year, and on
the board of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Crockett
is a lifetime member of the NAACP as well as a member of the Small
Environmental Business Action Coalition; DC Metropolitan
Subcontractors Association; Maryland/ Washington Minority
Contractors Association; and on both the Metropolitan Washington and
Baltimore chapters of the Associated Building Contractors. Mr.
Crockett began his career in environmental remediation in 1984 and
is recognized as an asbestos and lead-based paint remediation
expert. Presently, SCS is performing work for the Department of
Defense on the Pentagon Wedge 2
Renovation project. Mr. Crockett holds a B.A. degree in Economics
and Computer Science from
Iona College, New
York. He and his wife Florence have two children, Sterling Jr. and
Nicole.
Ann Eskelsen
Ms.
Eskelsen is currently serving as a Director, is a member of the
Chorale Operations Committee, and is Vice President/Secretary of the
Friends of the National Philharmonic. Ms. Eskelsen is the Grant
Manager for the 21st Century Community Learning Center
grantee for a Montgomery County high school that provides academic
support and motivational encouragement to at-risk students. She
currently signs with the National Philharmonic Chorale and sang for
numerous years with Masterworks Chorus where she served in
leadership positions. Ms. Eskelsen has been active in civic
organizations in the Washington area. She lives in Kensington, MD
with her husband Todd, and their three sons.
Carol Evans
Ms. Evans has recently retired from the position of Deputy Manager,
Biomedical Technology Division, at Science Applications
International Corporation (SAIC). She has spent her career in the
medical/health sciences field. While at SAIC, she had oversight of
congressionally directed medical research programs (breast, prostate
and ovarian cancer) between 1992-2004. Prior to that, she was the
recipient of several research grants to investigate the effects of
electromagnetic fields on biological tissue. In this capacity, she
was one of the editors of the book Electrofusion and
Electroporation in Cell Biology, editor of the
Bioelectromagnetics Newsletter, and served on the board of the
Bioelectromagnetics Society. She currently serves on the
President’s Council of the National Breast Cancer Coalition. Ms.
Evans graduated from Wellesley College and did graduate studies at
the University of Maryland. She and her husband, Dr. John Evans,
reside in Clarksburg, Maryland. When not getting in condition to
bicycle “someplace in the world,” they can be found in concert
halls, on ski slopes, or along some hiking trails.
Ruth Faison
Ms. Faison currently serves as a Director and member of the Chorale
Operations Committee. Ruth also sings in the National Philharmonic
Chorale. Ms. Faison has two degrees from
Duke
University
(B.A., Religion, Psychology, and M. Div.) and two years of chaplain
training at the Duke Medical Center. Ms. Faison has taught eighth,
tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders, been the school photographer,
and coached girls tennis, at St. Andrew's Episcopal School in
Potomac for 27 years. She is Chair of the Religion Department and
teaches trimester courses in Ethics, World Religions, Introduction
to the Bible, and Photojournalism. For 15 summers Ms. Faison has
been an instructor at the North Carolina Outward Bound School. She
currently lives in upper Montgomery County, enjoys photography, road
biking and other sports, reads a lot, and is an avid college
basketball fan!
Jacqueline A.
Haynes
Ms. Haynes is a
Washington,
DC native who received her BS, Master's and Ph.D. form
the University of
Maryland.
Her career has included working as a teacher, reading specialist and
reading supervisor in a large area school system; a faculty member
at the University of Maryland Department Special Education and as a
consultant in uses of educational technology. For the past 20
years, Ms. Haynes has been the Executive Vice President of
Intelligent Automation, Inc. (IAI) in
Rockville,
which she founded with her husband, Leonard. IAI performs research
and development in artificial intelligence applications in high-tech
areas including education and training applications. Ms. Haynes is
married with two married children and four grandchildren.
Dr. Robert Hazen
Dr. Hazen currently serves as a Director. Dr. Hazen, Senior
Scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington's Geophysical
Laboratory and Clarence Robinson Professor of Earth Science at
George Mason University, received a B.S. and S.M. in geology at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1971), and a Ph.D. at Harvard
University in earth science (1975). Dr. Hazen is author of more
than 330 articles and 20 books on science, history, and music. He
has received a number of awards for writing and research, including
the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award. Dr. Hazen's recent research focuses
on the role of minerals in the origin of life. In addition to his
scientific activities, Dr. Hazen is a professional trumpeter. He
has performed with numerous ensembles including the Metropolitan,
New York City,
Boston, and Washington Operas, the Royal, Bolshoi, Jeoffrey, and
Kirov Ballets, the Boston Symphony, the National Symphony, and the
Orchestre de Paris. A founding member of the National Chamber
Orchestra and the Washington Chamber Symphony, he is presently a
member of the Washington Bach Consort and the National Gallery
Orchestra, and he performs regularly with the National Philharmonic.
Dieneke Johnson
Ms. Johnson currently serves as a Director, Second Vice President
and Member of the Government Relations Committee. Born and raised
in The Netherlands, Ms. Johnson was lucky to have a mother with a
great love of music, which she fostered in her children. She works
in advertising, marketing, and public relations for The Gazette
where she has been employed since the late 1970s. Ms. Johnson was
involved with the National Chamber Orchestra since its second year
of existence (in 1987). Soon after, she was asked to chair the
annual fundraiser, and to join the Board of Directors. She has
served in various capacities ever since then, almost all on the
executive committee level. For the past six years she has been
mentoring a young girl, and has brought her to most of the National
Philharmonic performances at Strathmore as part of the All Kids All
Free All the Time initiative. That has exposed her to music she
would otherwise never have heard at her age. After attending the A.
Mario Loiederman Middle School she is now at Einstein High School.
Another mentee from Veirs Mill Elementary School is now becoming a
semi regular at the concerts as well. Ms. Johnson resides in
Montgomery Village where she raised her three children. She now
shares her life with Bob Jordan, who shuttles between his home in
Hawaii and
Maryland;
between the two families there are six children and four
grandchildren to keep them busy.
Joan Levenson
Ms.
Levenson is a charter member and former President of Congregation
Har Shalom in Potomac, Maryland. She now serves on the Board of
Directors, and has chaired many projects including fundraising and
community outreach. Ms. Levenson is currently Chairman of the Alan
B. Levenson Foundation, an organization for enhancing the integrity
and the ethical standards of financial and securities institutions
and the professionals who serve them. She received a B.A. in speech
therapy from
Emerson
College.
Ms. Levenson is a lover of the arts, including music, theater and
cinema. She resides in
Potomac,
Maryland
and is the mother of Scott and Julie and grandmother of five.
Dr.
Wayne Meyer
Dr.
Meyer is a board-certified internist offering primary care to adults
and adolescents in
Rockville,
Maryland.
He is a tenor in the National Philharmonic Chorale and sang with
former Masterworks Chorus for over 10 years. Dr. Meyer serves on the
Medical Executive Committee of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, is
the immediate past chair of its Utilization Review Committee and is
active with the Montgomery County Medical Society. He also is on
the adjunct faculty of
George
Washington
University
Medical
Center.
Dr. Meyer is a "top doctor" in Washingtonian and Consumer
Reports and has been featured on "Nightline" and WTOP's "Ask the
Doctor." Dr. Meyer is on the Board of Trustees of Stone Ridge
School of the Sacred Heart and Chair of its Head Evaluation and
Support Committee. He graduated from The College of William & Mary,
received his medical degree from the University of Virginia and
completed his medical training at
George Washington
University Hospital.
Dr. Roscoe M.
Moore, Jr.
Dr.
Moore is very active in the D.C. Metropolitan community and has
served as President of Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) for 3
years and now serves on its Advisory Board. He is an active
supporter of and subscriber to the Arts – theater and music - in
Baltimore as well as D.C. Dr. Moore's breadth of contacts, interest
in the arts and respected position in the community would well serve
the National Philharmonic in its efforts to broaden its audience
base and raise funds. Dr. Moore is a retired Rear Admiral, U.S.
Public Health Service. He is Founder and President of PH RockWood
Corporation. Dr. Moore is a Senior Fellow within the Potomac
Institute for Policy Studies. He serves as a Commissioner on the
Maryland Health Care Commission. He is a Senior Advisor to PeerSat
Corporation. Dr. Moore serves on the Board of Directors for the
Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce. He serves on the Advisory
Board of the Adams National Bank (Silver Spring). Dr. Moore received his undergraduate and Doctor of
Veterinary Medicine degrees from Tuskegee Institute; his Master of
Public Health degree in Epidemiology from the
University of
Michigan; and his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Epidemiology from
the Johns Hopkins University. He was awarded the Honorary Doctor of
Science degree in recognition of his distinguished public health
career by Tuskegee University. He was honored with an award by the
Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras for Outstanding Service. Dr. Moore
and his wife Patricia have two adult sons, and reside in Rockville,
Maryland.
Dr. Kenneth
Moritsugu
As
Vice President for Global Strategic Affairs for LifeScan, a Johnson
and Johnson company, Dr. Moritsugu is responsible for coordinating
the strategic efforts of Johnson and Johnson in addressing the
increasing diabetes pandemic. He is Chairman of the Johnson and
Johnson Diabetes Institute, a global initiative to provide awareness
and training in state of the art science, information, and
technology relevant to diabetes prevention, awareness, diagnosis and
treatment. Prior to his current position, Dr. Moritsugu was the
Acting Surgeon General of the
United States
from July 2006 to his retirement from the Commissioned Corps of the
United States Public Health Service in September 2007 after 37 years
of active duty. Dr. Moritsugu was born and raised in Honolulu,
Hawaii. He received his Baccalaureate Degree with Honors in
Classical Languages from the University of Hawaii, an M.D. from the
George Washington University School of Medicine and an M.P.H. in
Health Administration and Planning from the
University of
California,
Berkeley. Additionally, he serves as an emeritus Trustee of the
Physician Assistants Foundation (PAF) of the American Academy of
Physician Assistants, and a trustee of the American Osteopathic
Foundation. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the
Royal Society of Medicine Foundation, and is the immediate past
Chair of the U.S. Chapter of the Royal Society of Health.
Peter Ryan
Mr.
Ryan, CPA, received his MBA in Finance from the University of
Baltimore, preceded by his BA in Accounting from The Catholic
University of America. In 1988, Mr. Ryan co-founded Ryan and
Wetmore, PC. Today, Ryan and Wetmore, PC is a three office, regional
top 50 accounting firm in the
Washington
DC metro area. Additionally, Ryan and Wetmore, PC is
part of the BDO Seidman Alliance, which is a nationwide association
of independently owned local and regional firms. Mr. Ryan’s
accounting and consulting specialties include health care
organizations, construction companies, government contractors, tax
litigation and litigation support services, startup businesses,
business research groups, technology groups, call centers, mergers
and acquisitions, and not-for profit organizations. Additionally,
Mr. Ryan has volunteered his time and served on the boards of local
nonprofit organizations and was recently elected to serve as a board
member on the finance committee of
Lowell School in
Washington, DC. Mr. Ryan supports and attends many charitable
events such as NFTE, Catholic University, Catholic Charities,
Housing Initiative partnership, Jelleff Boys and Girls Club and more
and strongly believes in the importance of giving back to the
community.
Norman M. Sinel
Mr.
Sinel currently serves as a Director of the National Philharmonic.
He is a Partner with Arnold & Porter LLP. He specializes in
telecommunications issues and was the head of the Firm’s
Telecommunications group from 1981 to 2005. Between 1971-1979, he
served in various positions at Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)
culminating in Senior Vice President, Corporate Management and
General Counsel (The Corporate Management Group included the General
Counsel’s Office, the Finance Department, and the Research Group).
Mr. Sinel is a classical music lover who brings to the Board an
in-depth understanding of the challenges of art organizations. Mr.
Sinel has represented (on a pro bono basis) the Millennium
Arts Center and the Group of Artists who were resident in the
Millennium
Arts
Center
and has previously served as a member of the Board and of the
Executive Committee of the Washington Chamber Orchestra.
Peggy Young
Ms. Young is President and CEO of NOVA Research Company, a company
she founded in 1986 to provide research support services to Federal
programs of the Department of Health and Human Services and the
National Institutes of Health. NOVA facilitates the timely
transfer of technology and information from research and clinical
labs to policy makers, health care providers, and the general
public. Since its inception, NOVA has maintained its core program
areas and expanded into (1) grant research in the behavioral
sciences; (2) software development and educational products under
the Small Business Innovation Research program; (3) multimedia
technology development; and (4) community outreach and recruiting.
Prior to starting her own small business, Ms. Young was a biochemist
at Riker Labs (a pharmaceutical company in Northridge, California);
a research associate at the UCLA School of Medicine; and a senior
lab technician at the Frederick Cancer Research and Development
Center in Frederick, Maryland. She has co-authored over 20
scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals. Ms. Young is
classical music lover who, with her husband Paul (also a Board
member), has supported National Philharmonic both as a ticket holder
and professionally.
Verl Zanders
Mr. Zanders
has distinguished himself in a career spanning more than 36 years in
the public and private sector. He is a nationally recognized expert
in Federal Government contracting and has frequently been a speaker
at national small business procurement events, and conducts
workshops to promote small business development.
During his tenure with the
federal government, Verl served as the Director of Small Business
Programs at the Office of the Secretary, U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services for over 10 years. He also served a number
of years as a Procurement Center Representative (PCR) for the
Small Business Administration. After retirement from the
federal government in 2000, Verl took the institutional knowledge gained while serving in the
government, leveraged it in the true spirit of entrepreneurship and
started his own business as a Federal contractor. Mr. Zanders
established Z-Tech Corporation, a successful technology business
offering skills and services that provides software engineering, Web
design and development, and scientific computing services in support
of federal health agencies. In 2007, Verl successfully positioned
Z-Tech to be acquired by large business. Mr. Zanders maintains
active involvement with several community organizations.
