Ron Goodman

For over thirty-five years, Ron Goodman has represented a variety of sovereign States, State entities and diverse corporate clients in numerous international court, arbitration and alternative dispute proceedings, including, among others, before the United Nations Compensation Commission, established as a result of the Gulf War, the World Bank’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, every major arbitration institution (ICC, LCIA, AAA, etc) and under a variety of other arbitration rules, including those of UNCITRAL and of national legal regimes; acted as arbitrator; also advised governments with respect to treaties and treaty drafting, conflict avoidance, and law reform;  was also a member of the legal staff of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, established in The Hague in 1981.

Cases have involved a variety of legal and technical issues, including, among others, treaty interpretation, international and investment law, complex international commercial transactions, major construction works, precious metal mining, energy, environmental and remediation issues, maintenance issues with respect to a country’s submarine fleet, oil field extraction, gas distribution, foreign military sales, road construction delay claims,  faulty jet engine parts, airfield landing rights, coal mine supply sales, chemical plant explosion reinsurance issues, undersea pipelines, dam construction, sales distribution agreements, and real estate development in world heritage sites, among many others.

Established and ran the first office of an American law firm in Africa, in South Africa, just after the election of President Nelson Mandela, represented President Mandela and his government in various development projects, defense procurement, public-private partnerships, project financings, and environmental and conservation work, including the first-in-the-world multi-country anti-malaria treaty and conversion of wetlands to a World Heritage site.  Also advised the governments of Mozambique, Swaziland, and the IFC on various restructuring, conservation, and regulatory matters.
