The National Philharmonic proposes to record a studio album of works by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor in February 2025, under the baton of Grammy®-Winning conductor Michael Repper. The album will be released by Avie Records in August 2025, to coincide with the composer’s 150th birthday. The works on the album will all be world-premiere recordings, and will feature newly-uncovered works including the tone poem Toussaint L’Ouverture. The orchestra will also be joined by multi Grammy®-Nominated violinist Curtis Stewart, with whom the orchestra will make the first recording of Coleridge-Taylor’s Ballade Op. 4 for Violin and Orchestra.
The full album is as follows:
Toussaint L’Ouverture
Ballade Op. 4 for Violin and Orchestra (Curtis Stewart, Violin)
5 Negro Melodies (arr. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor)
3 Negro Melodies (arr. Curtis Stewart, Curtis Stewart, Violin)
The project aims to promote the work of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, furthering the National Philharmonic’s mission to center the work of composers from underrepresented backgrounds. In addition, support NatPhil’s 40th Anniversary and 20th Anniversary at The Music Center at Strathmore. The album will be produced by industry veteran Judith Sherman, herself the all-time winningest classical producer at the Grammy® Awards.
