Verdi’s Requiem

Victoria Gau, conductor
Presented by National Philharmonic and Cantate

Saturday, November 23, 2024 · 7:30 pm
Strathmore

Like NatPhil, award-winning and critically acclaimed choral organization Cantate is celebrating their 40th anniversary season, which makes it the perfect time to join in collaboration! Welcome Cantate Artistic Director and former NatPhil Associate Conductor Victoria Gau as guest conductor premiering this exciting new partnership with a full-scale production of Verdi’s Requiem.

Gau is joined by Cantate, alongside four soloists who will bring power, emotion, and intensity to their performances. Soprano Amber Monroe is said to possess “A magnificent instrument with powerful richness in her lower register and a bell-clear top”. Magdalena Wór “has that kind of velvety rich mezzo that makes you want to follow her anywhere”. Rafael Moras “brings romance and heartbreak with his soaring tenor tones”. Operatic bass Zaikuan Song, who is known for his majestically resonant voice and keen dramatic instinct in interpreting the profound depths of Verdi’s most poignant works, rounds out this impressive quartet of talented vocal artists.

Whether you’re newly rediscovering or experiencing Verdi’s Requiem for the first time, you’ll be enthralled by a work that was announced a masterpiece upon its first performance in 1874.
